In America

In the US of A, they watch the cars go round in circles. There are enough roundabouts it Milton Keynes to remind us that it's not much fun.

And of course they have the blondes on the grid. And Martin Brundle is British enough to have to resort to interviewing them to determine their function. Below is a translation from their natural languages into English. (I hope I don't need to point out that both BBC English* and US English are both foreign languages to me.)

So what are you doing here on the grid?

Standing here looking gorgeous of course

Very good. [pause] Why?

So the drivers and everyone elseĀ  have something gorgeous to look at of course.

This about the point I got up to avoid the urge to throw things at an innocent Sun Monitor. No wonder Formula 1 is not as popular over there. Then I could say something about the Umbrella Girls at Spa a few years ago, but it might involve mentioning Belgium**. Bugger.

* Yes I know it's shown on ITV these days, but it doesn't mean Martin doesn't speak BBC english.

**Possibly the rudest word ever..... to be mentioned on BBC Radio 4.... You really have to have BBC humour to get this....

On a more regional note, I finally watched the Top Gear with Christopher Eccleston in it. There were many comments about being "fromt' wrong side o' t' 'ills" in another pair of foreign languages.
