The full story
At 5pm last night, a dave1 dropped round said laptop, and gave me a lift to a steve's2 party. The assembled geeked about cthulu, a few LARPs, mythtv, and the hidden powers of me and my arch nemesis (who is a non-dave), who has the power to scare computers into not working (hence laptop gift), and my ability to scare things into working. Either way all of us, except another non-dave that happens to own a Jaguar and wanted to drive it home, were very very drunk by 5am, when I hitched a lift home in said jaguar.
I then asked dave3 said question via ICQ. The only *buntu disk I could find was Mythbuntu (Gutsy), so on went that. Attempt 1 endded in "I'll try the safe graphics mode".
Attempt 2, and I got trapped in the power cable tangled and it all fell down, (fixing the DVD drive that likes to randomly ejecct in the process. Score!)
Attempt 3 and I have the thing running as a frontend to my mythtv server and a big grin. Mythbuntu on the advanced install is drunk-proof. This is impressive. So it's up and running, I'm watching news 24 in widescreen by 7am. Wireless detected, /me notices half the houses i have wireless, most unsecured, and /me promptly disables wirleless and rejouces in having cabled galore.
Another major bonus, it's offering me propriety drivers for the built-in modem. I have to say it. W00t
